Marin County Swimming Pool Filters

Swimming Pool Filters are an important piece of equipment used for keeping our pool water clean and clear in Marin County. Filters are designed to force water under pressure though sand, pleats or grids depending on the filter type. Like their name implies pool filters remove and collect debris from the water. If you find that you have poor water quality then there may be a problem with the filter like a hole, tear, or the internal parts are not sealed properly - this could be letting debris pass back to the pool. Next to your pool pump this is the most important piece of equipment to keep maintained; we at Marin Pool Service can help you to keep it in good working order. Let's consider the most common pool filter we see in Marin County and some basic troubleshooting.

Sand Filters

Water is pushed through a bed of filter sand and removed through a set of lateral tubes at the bottom. Dirty water comes in at the top and clean water exits out the bottom. As the sand collects debris it becomes more efficient in filtering your pool however, pressure goes up and water flow decreases. In order to clean the sand filter you set it to backwash which runs the filter in reverse and dumps the waste water. After back washing it's placed into rinse mode which helps repack the sand then back into the filter. In terms of efficiency sand is the least efficient for filtering out pool debris.

Cartridge Filters

Water passes through a paper like filter material that separates and collects the debris from the water. Cartridge filters have more available area to filter than sand. Cartridge filters typically last for about 5 years on average and we recommend for Marin County a filter cleaning two times a year. Part of the Personalized Pool Service at Marin Pool Service includes one filter cleaning normally done in the middle of the year. Cleaning typically involves spraying a cleaner on the filter material to break down oils and then hosing them off. Cartridge filters are more efficient than sand and collect debris at a smaller micron.

D.E. Filters

Diatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. They are used to coat "grids" in the filter housing and act as tiny sieves to remove debris. They are very small and as such can filter out particles as small as 5 microns. The filter is cleaned by back-washing the filter just like sand and then recharging by adding D.E. Powder. Typically you add the D.E. Slurry through the skimmer and it then coats the filter grids.

Leaking Filter?

Most D.E. And Cartridge filters have a belly band clamp with a large O-ring between tank halves. The O'ring can become distended or flattened and may need to be replaced. Also, some filters have drain plugs with O-rings. Marin Pool Service can help prevent and stop your leaking filters in Marin County with a thorough inspection and replacement of worn out parts.

Let us at Marin Pool Service help you get the most out of your swim season in Marin County by keeping your filter maintained properly.
